Team cohesion day: the schedule hour by hour, without an overnight stay

A team cohesion day is a working day away from the office, without an overnight stay, which alternates between three phases: a working session, a group activity, and a shared meal. It runs from 9 am to 5 pm, one hour from Paris by train, for a group of around ten to two hundred people depending on the house.

What to remember

  • A cohesion day consists of three phases, from 9 am to 5 pm: a working session in the morning, a group activity in the early afternoon, and a shared meal in between. Without an overnight stay, it falls under the study day package.
  • During working hours, a day organised by the employer falls under their management authority; outside of these hours, it cannot be imposed. To be checked with the HR department before sending the invitation.
  • Paris-Saint-Lazare connects to Chaumont-en-Vexin by direct train in 1 hr 07; the Groupe Moulin de la Forge covers the taxi from the station for three people or more, which makes the day feasible without a car.
  • One activity per house, with published prices: orienteering and rafts at the Moulin (€55 per person, 2 hr 30), mountain bike rally and canoeing on the Epte at the Manoir (€55), golf introduction at Rebetz (€60, 1 hr 30).
  • The capacities are those of the rooms in theatre style: 80 seats at the Manoir des Brumes, 140 at the Moulin de la Forge, 200 at the Domaine de Rebetz. A group of 120 only has one possible house.

The pages that respond to “team cohesion day” are lists: thirteen ideas, twenty-five ideas, fifty activities. None of them say what time you start, what you do between noon and two, or how you get home. Yet this is exactly what a team manager needs to write in their invitation email. Here is a complete schedule, as we see it work in our three houses in the Vexin, with what each phase produces, what it costs and what you need to check before inviting anyone.

What a cohesion day is, and what it is not

A cohesion day is not an outing. It is a working day where the location and pace are changed to achieve what the office does not provide: a decision made together, and conversations that do not go through the hierarchy. If the day contains no working time, it is a team building. If it includes an overnight stay, it is a residential seminar. In between the two, the cohesion day consists of three phases, and the order matters: work first, when attention is high; the meal next; the activity afterwards, when the body needs to move.

Cohesion day, study day, team building: three words, two formats

“Study day” is the name that seminar venues give to the package without an overnight stay: equipped room, welcome coffee, breaks, lunch, from arrival to departure. “Cohesion day” is the name the company gives to what it does with it. These are two sides of the same format: a study day on the venue side, a cohesion day on the team side. “Team building” only refers to the activity, one of the three building blocks. Establishing these words before requesting a quote avoids comparing a complete package with a single activity.

Is it mandatory?

This is the most frequently asked question on the subject, and it deserves a clear answer. A day organised by the employer during working hours falls under their management authority, just like a meeting or a training session: employees are expected to attend. Outside of working hours, it cannot be imposed. In all cases, a physical activity remains voluntary, and an employee who cannot participate must have something else to do other than watch. The safest approach is to check these three points with the HR department and write them down in black and white in the invitation, along with the schedule and the means of transport: this is what puts an end to discussions.

The typical schedule, from 9 am to 5 pm

Here is an example based on a departure from Paris-Saint-Lazare by direct train, line J, arriving in Chaumont-en-Vexin in 1 hr 07, followed by a few minutes in a taxi. The times can be adjusted; the structure, less so.

Time Phase What it produces
9:30 am Welcome coffee. Tea, coffee, the house’s apple juice, snack. People arrive on the same train, which already counts. A group that starts together, not scattered
10 am Working session, in plenary then in subgroups of five or six, on a single question asked in advance. The manager sets the framework, they do not facilitate everything. A decision, or a short list of decisions to make
12:30 pm Lunch, buffet style, seated, without a seating plan. The buffet is the format that mixes people the most. The conversations that the meeting room does not allow
2 pm Group activity, outdoors, in the same subgroups as the morning: orienteering, rally, golf introduction, guided walk, depending on the house. A shared result, a photo that was not posed
4:15 pm Gourmet break, then a twenty-minute debriefing: what was decided in the morning, who does what next week. The day linked to the work that resumes the next day
5 pm Departure. Taxi to the station, direct train to Saint-Lazare. Everyone home by dinner time

Two choices in this schedule are non-negotiable, in our opinion. A single question for the morning session: a day that tackles three subjects tackles none. And the same subgroups in the morning and afternoon: this is what ensures the activity extends the work instead of opposing it.

The activity: one per house, chosen to link with the morning

The choice of activity comes last, once the venue and capacity are set. Each of our three houses has its own, led by the venue’s team, with a price published by the group for 2026; others are available in all three.

House House activity What it requires Duration, published price
Moulin de la Forge (up to 140 in theatre style) Orienteering on the estate, then raft building and racing on the large pond Teams, no fitness level required, clothes that can get wet 2 hr 30 minimum, €55 per person
Manoir des Brumes (up to 80) Mountain bike rally to Mont Sainte-Hélène, return by canoe on the Epte to the Manoir; or orienteering through the history of the Manoir and chariot race Knowing how to cycle; canoeing is done in pairs 2 hr 30 minimum, €55 per person
Domaine de Rebetz (up to 200) Golf introduction with a professional, on the estate’s driving range Nothing; all levels, including zero 1 hr 30, €60 per person
All three Guided biodiversity walk; team cooking: zero waste; and with free access, mountain bikes, sports equipment, pétanque, mölkky, campfire In groups of fifteen for the walk Walk 1 hr 30, €120 per group; team cooking 2 hours, €50 per person; free access included in the package

Our advice for a cohesion day, as opposed to a festive seminar: choose the activity that produces a shared result (a floating raft, a served menu, a completed course) rather than one that produces a ranking. A ranking creates winners. Cohesion needs an object made together. All twelve activities are described on the website, along with what each requires.

The “four pillars” of cohesion: what a day really changes

The question “what are the four pillars of team cohesion?” comes up in all research on the subject, and the answers vary depending on who gives them. The four most frequently cited are: a common goal understood by all, clear roles, trust between people, and direct communication. Let us be honest about what a day can achieve. It does not create trust; trust is earned over months. It does not redistribute roles. It serves the other two, and it serves them well: the morning session sets a goal that everyone has heard from the same mouth, and the meal and the activity get people talking who, in the office, only speak via messaging.

What transforms a one-day effect into a lasting effect comes down to the next day. The 4:15 pm debriefing must name a decision and a person per decision. Then, on Monday, the manager sends these lines to the team. Without this, the day remains a good memory, which is already something, but not what it was paid for.

How much it costs, how many people, how to get here

The cost has three components. The venue’s day package, which covers the equipped room, welcome coffee, breaks and lunch: with us, the study day package is established by quote, depending on the house and the season. The supervised activity, whose prices are published: €55 to €60 per person for the house sports activities, €120 per group for the biodiversity walk, €50 per person for the zero waste team cooking. Finally, transport, which weighs more than you might think when you have to hire a coach or reimburse mileage.

The number determines the house. The capacities are those of the rooms in theatre style: 80 seats at the Manoir des Brumes, 140 at the Moulin de la Forge, 200 in the Rebetz amphitheatre. A team of twenty fits anywhere and will choose according to the activity; a department of 120 only has one possible house. To compare the three, the our houses page provides the room charts.

Transport is the point that decides the feasibility without an overnight stay. Paris-Saint-Lazare connects to Chaumont-en-Vexin by direct train via line J in 1 hr 07, and Gisors a little further on; the three houses are 3, 8 and 15 minutes from these stations, and we cover the taxi from the station for three people or more, as well as 20% of the cost of a bus for an entire group (details on the getting here page). The IFTM × Kactus 2025 barometer notes that the preference for trains is growing among organisers; for a day without an overnight stay, it is above all the condition for everyone to arrive at the same time and leave on time.

Four mistakes that ruin a cohesion day

  • No work question. A day “to bond the team” without a topic becomes an outing, and the participants feel it. The morning’s work is what legitimises the rest.
  • A venue two hours away. The journey eats up the day, people arrive scattered and leave before the debriefing. Without an overnight stay, the venue must be one hour away, by train.
  • An activity that ranks. A competition creates three winners and twenty losers. For cohesion, you need an object made together.
  • No Monday. Without a written and sent debriefing, the day fades in a week.

If the subject requires two working sessions, or if it is in the evening that people will really talk to each other, the day will not be enough: this is the case for the residential seminar, two days and one night. And to choose the venue, whatever the format, we have written a grid of seven criteria that starts with the station.

Frequently asked questions

What is a team cohesion day?

A working day spent away from the office, without an overnight stay, which alternates a working session, a group activity and a shared meal. It differs from a residential seminar by the absence of a night on site, and from simple team building by the amount of work it contains. At a seminar venue, it corresponds to the study day package, from the welcome coffee to the departure in the late afternoon.

Is a cohesion day mandatory?

If it takes place during working hours and is organised by the employer, it falls under their management authority, like a meeting or a training session. Outside of working hours, it cannot be imposed. Physical activities remain voluntary. The safest approach is to check this with the HR department and write it in the invitation, along with the schedule and the means of transport.

Which activity to choose for team cohesion?

An activity where everyone has a role, with no physical fitness level required, and which ends with a shared result rather than a ranking. A team orienteering race, a walk with a guide, a cooking workshop that produces the meal. What matters less: originality. What matters more: that the activity extends the morning session, for example by keeping the same subgroups.

What are the four pillars of team cohesion?

The expression comes up often, without a single source. The four most frequently cited are: a common goal understood by all, clear roles, trust between members, and direct communication. A day does not establish all four. It serves the first and the fourth: you agree on a goal, and you talk to each other outside the hierarchy. The other two are built upon return, in daily work.

How much does a team cohesion day cost?

Three components: the venue’s day package (room, breaks, lunch), the supervised activity, transport. At the Groupe Moulin de la Forge, the study day package is established by quote; the activities have a published price, from €55 to €60 per person for the house sports activities, €120 per group for the biodiversity walk; the taxi from the station is covered for three people or more. The residential package is published from €295 to €410 excl. VAT.

Cohesion day or residential seminar: how to choose?

The day is suitable when the goal consists of one working session and one activity, and the group lives less than two hours away. The residential option is essential when you need two working sessions, an evening that counts as much as the day, or a group scattered across France. Between the two, the decisive criterion is the evening: if that is when people will really talk to each other, you need the overnight stay.
